Dr. Arosanyin said that Nigeria’s desire to develop would remain impossible except the rural areas were given considerable attention.
He noted that if the government could channel enough resources to the development of the rural area, then there was an assurance of national growth and development.
“The infrastructures are in a bad state and that’s why most of the produce always end up at the farm gate, making it difficult for farmers to get dividend for their produce.’’ He said
He stated that the challenges faced by rural area dwellers which includes absence of industrial and health facilities, low standard of the education system among other poor social services would be tackled if necessary facilities were provided.
“Provision of basic infrastructure such as potable water, electricity supply and access roads, will surely reduce urban migration and create rapid development in rural areas. He said
“The need to boost agriculture in rural areas is very essential considering the ever rising population of the country.’’
Dr. Arosanyin who applauded the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for its policies appealed to the Federal government to review the principles of the National Policy on Integrated Rural Development for proper implementation as groundwork for the nation’s growth.
“It is estimated that 85 percent of the extremely poor in Nigeria currently live in rural areas.” He said
“Nevertheless, the rural sector is predominantly agriculture-based which include livestock, forestry and fisheries and employed 75 percent of the labour force and contributes about 40 per cent of the GDP.”
“Agricultural cooperatives are considered as one of the important economic and social organisation in rural communities.’’ He added.
