Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), and Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) to boost agricultural value chain in the country.
The partnership, it was learnt would also enhance the use of indigenous technologies in diversifying the economy, creating new jobs, improving the National Gross Domestic Product as well as the others aspects of the economy.
“I would like to say that the most beneficial objective of this partnership would be partnership that brings agricultural value chains development to the fore, most especially enhancement of the value chains where Nigeria has upmost comparative advantage”, Elemo told the Managing Director of NIRSAL, Aliyu Abdulhameed and the Executive Secretary of PTDF, Bello Aliyu who paid a courtesy visit to her in Lagos, recently.
Elemo stated her preference for the partnership to focus on the development of value chains on commodities for which Nigeria has comparative advantage such as rice, cashew and cassava.
She stated that the institute had the needed expertise to fabricate and install processing machinery and equipment for micro, small and medium enterprises as well as offered technical consultancy services to large scale enterprises in these value chains.
The FIIRO Director-General noted that the institute’s ‘Change Agenda’ was focused on the agricultural sector as a critical means for the diversification of the Nigerian economy.
On his part, Abdulhameed noted that the agency was funded adequately by government with over $500million set aside to finance the agricultural sector and its value chain, adding that NIRSAL entered into the partnership with FIIRO because it was not mandated to conduct research.
He expressed NIRSAL’s readiness to adopt the FIIRO Tomato Catalytic Model Plant, operational in Kano as a model for enhancing agricultural value chain in the country.
Aliyu in his submission, said PTDF’s target in the partnership was developing human capacity to transform the country industrially through indigenous technology.
He said the country could tackle post-harvest losses and boost activities of farmers and agro-processors through the application of technology.
