Mr Val said the idea is to have food sufficiency in the country, provide jobs and to cut government spending on importation of fertilizers. He added that it is through sufficient fertilizer supply and distribution, that poor people, which covers 99% of the population, can be helped out of hunger and poverty.
He said this can only be achieved by providing local farmers with sufficient fertilizers at affordable price- the idea which breed the Presidential Fertilizer programme of President Buhari. For the programme to succeed, he added, the presidential committee on fertilizer Chaired by Jigawa state governor involved FEPSAN in it in addition to other members which include NSIA, CBN, and NNPC.
Mr Val said part of the benefits of the programme include:
- The Fertilizers are mainly produced from Local raw materials while only necessary ingredients are being imported from Morocco after signing an create economic activities.
- Six million bags have so far been produced and sold locally.
- Eleven blending plants are now in full operation at full capacity with more to come into operations shortly.
- 50,000 jobs created directly with 125 more jobs indirectly.
- Reviving of blending plants that were neglected due to lack of production.
On the problem being faced by programme, Mr Val Nwandu said they include lack of good roads, sufficient trucks and lack of storage facilities for raw materials and finished products. Other problems he mentioned include congestion at Port which brings about delay in transporting raw materials on time to plants.
On the way forward Mr Val said the programme will reach a level that agro dealers will be in total control without government interference, that is, fully privatized. He further said more plants will be set up across all the states in order to bring the fertilizers closer to farmers in their localities.
He concluded that sector will 100% be private and that different types of fertilizers will be produced to cater for different crops and soils.

On his part the FEPSAN Vice President Alhaji Saidu G. B. Zakari, said the success of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative programme depends largely on honesty and patriotism. He therefore called on dealers and distributors to comply with strict guidelines that have been set up.

He said dealers and distributors must ensure the following:
- Honesty and patriotism are upheld
- Selling of 50 kg at N 5,500 without increasing the price
- Fertilizers are sold to intended farmers
