FAO SpiegelbildConcerned by the need to ensure food security among residents in Northeast Nigeria, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has distributed free fertilizers and seeds to 790,000 northeast farmers displaced by Boko Haram.
In the October Situation Report of the FAO, the UN agency said benefiting farmers were supported with fertilizers and inputs during the 2018 crop season.
It noted that the number of people facing food insecurity in the region dropped to 2.9 million (June-August, 2018); as against 5.2 million (June-August 2017).
FAO revealed that the northeast region faced severe climate changes which affected the production system negatively and has resulted in low yields and livestock production.
“Northeast farmers have begun harvesting cereal, vegetable and cash crops such as cowpea, groundnut and sesame; following provision of seed and fertilizers to 112,000 households under the 2018 rainy season programme
“The season appears to have been effective for numerous farming households, lessening the need for food assistance in some areas” It added
The report stated that the organizations’ priority between October and December which include the distribution of fertilizers and seeds to 61,300 households, provision of goats, poultry kits and veterinary services to 10,589 households.
