irrigation 218x150 FECWith a view to ensuring agricultural stability and viability in the country, President Muhammmadu Buhari on Monday, May 14, in collaboration with the World Bank launched the N9billion Hadejia Valley Irrigation Scheme (HVIS) in Auyo Local Government Area of Jigawa.
The president launched the rehabilitation project during a two-day visit to the state.
The scheme which is part of the Federal government effort towards the actualization of set agricultural goals will be implemented under the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) programme.
According to news reports, TRIMING is a special intervention programme under the umbrella of the Federal Government, targeted at promoting sustainable development of irrigated agriculture in the country while ensuring rapid growth and development of the agricultural sector.
The principal elements of the scheme include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Hadejia Barrage and Headwork, with 26.2km embankment and water storage capacity of 11.4 million cubic meters.
It also encompasses the rehabilitation of the 30km Feeder Canal and North Main Canal; the expansion of the 32.8km South Main Canal and the rehabilitation of the Main Drain and Drainage Buffer.
The cost of the project has been pegged at N9, 391, 038, 925 with a three-year completion period.
The contract for the HVIS project was awarded to CGC- YSEJ Joint Ventures in 2018 to execute the rehabilitation of existing gravity irrigation area, involving about 5,346 hectares, and expansion of about 778 hectares as well as the rehabilitation of the barrage.
