fooddodoEnugu State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emeka Edeh, says the state government plans to achieve self-sufficiency in food production and begin the exportation of food this year.
He said to achieve the target, the government had established 21 green cities for food production and 16 fish ponds across the state in a bid to make food readily available to the people.
Edeh said the state government had trained more than 2,000 youths on various agricultural schemes to make them self-reliant, adding that each of the youths was provided with N100,000 each to set up a business.
He pledged the state government’s commitment to implementing more of such programmes.
The commissioner revealed that the government had cultivated hectares of maize, rice, soya beans and other crops in the green cities.
He added that as part of the programme, the state government was encouraging the local governments to establish similar green cities.
