Dam picKatsina State Government has said it has signed an agreement for the construction an irrigation dam estimated at $70 million in Gwagwaye, Faskari Local Government Area of the state with an Indian firm, ABC Ltd.
Managing Director of the Katsina Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KATARDA), Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu, who stated this, Thursday in Katsina said under the MoU, the firm would also support farmers to grow wheat, rice, cotton, maize, groundnut, adding that they would be given improved seedlings.
“ABC Ltd of India has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Katsina state government for the dam project. The state government will provide the land for the construction of the dam and the farms while the Indian company will construct the dam and all the irrigation facilities in the area. The state government and the Indian firm have concluded signing all the documents for the commencement of the project,” he said.
Shehu said that tomato, onion and pepper seedlings would also be given to farmers in the state by the Indian firm, adding that Faskari Local Government Area was chosen for the project because of the availability of arable land there.
“The Faskari Local Government Area where the dam will be constructed has one of the best fertile farmlands in the state where all kinds of agricultural produce can be cultivated,” he said.
It will be recalled that the State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari had earlier signed an agreement for the production of 400 tractors with a tractor manufacturing company, Mahindra of India. The tractors would upon production be distributed to farmers in the state.
